Prepare your school for Windows 11

14th October 2025 – the date Microsoft stop providing Critical security updates for your school computers.

What needs to happen before the deadline?

Here’s a 5-step plan for schools to prepare for Windows 11 before the deadline:

1. Inventory and Assessment

  • Report on All Devices: Conduct a thorough inventory of all existing devices. Use tools like Microsoft’s Endpoint Manager or third-party software to generate reports on hardware specifications.
  • Identify Upgrade Challenges: Determine which devices meet the minimum requirements for Windows 11 and which ones may struggle or fail to upgrade.

2. Upgrade Old Computers on a Budget

  • Memory and Storage Upgrades: For devices that are close to meeting requirements, consider cost-effective upgrades such as adding more RAM or replacing HDDs with SSDs, and introducing TPM modules.
  • Refurbished Components: Source refurbished parts to save costs while extending the life of older machines.

3. Leasing as an Option

  • Explore Leasing Programs: Look into leasing options for new devices. Leasing can spread out costs over time and ensure access to the latest technology without a large upfront investment.
  • Vendor Partnerships: Partner with vendors who offer educational discounts and flexible leasing terms. We can introduce you to education specialists who are able to walk through options with you.

4. Implement a Rolling Replacement Plan

  • Phased Replacement: Develop a phased replacement plan to gradually replace the oldest and least capable devices first.
  • Budget Allocation: Allocate a portion of the annual budget for ongoing device replacement to avoid large, one-time expenses.
